It can be intimidating to look for your next career move in legal ops. But what if it didn’t have to be?

While the number of senior legal ops roles may not be massive, legal operators would be well served to wide their search to include other options (while not abandoning the search for that elusive, VP-level legal ops title).

First, consider looking at other operations roles: business operations, regulatory operations, Chief of Staff roles, and more. The skill sets: project managing people cross-functionality, keeping broader business context in mind, identifying and managing key vendors, tracking and reporting on metrics, identifying ways to implement AI - are ones that are applicable across departments. And some departments pay more than legal does. The Operators job board is a great resource to browse.

Second, while there has long been no shortage of legal tech companies to work for, the recent explosion in AI-related funding for legal startups presents opportunities for ambitious legal operators to step into revenue generating (or at least revenue-adjacent) roles in product, solutions consulting, and more. So instead of getting frustrated, think laterally. If you’re willing to get creative, the legal ops skillset will take you far.
